What are Sweatshops?
Sweatshops are shops or factories that employ people to work long hours at low wages and under unhealthy conditions. Over 90% of all sweatshops are located in developing areas of the world such as Africa and Asia, and are used by transnationals corporations to produce various products at a very low cost. These corporations can produce products such as clothes at a much lower price than if they were produced in North America as a result of the starvation wages that the employees of sweatshops are given. This makes it attractive for businesses to move their production overseas from North America into these developing countries as it allows them to become more profitable. However sweatshops raise multiple issues that not only affect the workers in the sweatshops but also the employees of the transnational corporations back in North America.
